Taking the first step toward counselling can be both exciting and nerve wracking. Understanding what to expect during your initial session can ease any anxieties and help you feel more prepared. Here is a brief overview of what you can expect during your first visit to Healthy Mind.

Warm Welcome and Comfortable Environment

Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by myself  and brought to the office or if you are early there is a waiting area. My office is designed to provide a comfortable, private, and safe space where you can relax and be yourself.

Initial Paperwork

Before your session begins, you will need to complete some initial paperwork. This typically includes basic personal information, contact details, and information on confidentiality and risk assessment. This information helps me understand your background and tailor the session to your needs.

Meet Your Counsellor

The first session is primarily about getting to know each other and establishing a rapport. I will create a nonjudgmental and supportive environment where you can openly discuss your concerns.

Setting Goals and Expectations

During the first session, I will ask questions to understand why you sought counselling and what you hope to achieve. We will discuss your personal history, current situation, and any specific issues you are facing. This is a collaborative process aimed at setting clear, achievable goals for your therapy.

Confidentiality and Trust

I will explain the principles of confidentiality, ensuring you understand that your discussions are private and protected. Trust is a cornerstone of effective therapy, and I am committed to creating a safe space for you to share openly and I abide by my professional body's ethical framework as well as compliance with GDPR regulations.

Exploring Your Concerns

The main focus of the first session is to explore your concerns in detail. I will listen attentively, offering empathy and understanding. This conversation helps identify key areas to address in future sessions and provides a foundation for your therapeutic journey.

Discussing the Counselling Process

I will explain how the counselling process works, including the different approaches and techniques that may be used. We will also discuss the frequency and duration of sessions, giving you a clear understanding of what to expect moving forward.

Your Questions Answered

You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the counselling process, my qualifications and background, or anything else that is on your mind. This is your time to gather the information you need to feel comfortable and informed.

Next Steps

At the end of the session we will decide on a plan for moving forward, which may include scheduling your next session and any initial strategies to start working on your goals.
